Serving Clients Throughout Georgia Since 1974

William G. Hasty, Jr., or “Billy” as most in the Canton area know him, has a long history in the community he calls home, and he continues to be one of its biggest supporters.

My dad always gave his time to the community,” Billy said. “He taught me that early on: Give your time and your financial support back.

Billy, who has been practicing law in Georgia since 1974, has taken that advice to heart. He has served as Canton City Attorney and as an attorney for the Cherokee County Development Authority for more than 20 years.

In his “spare” time, Billy has been an active participant in the Cherokee County community. He has acted as pro bono counsel for the Cherokee Training Center, an organization that serves residents with developmental disabilities, for more than 30 years.

Education & Experience

Billy earned his associate’s degree from Reinhardt University in Waleska, GA, where he now serves as chairman of the board of trustees and chairman of the board for the school’s executive committee. He went on to complete his bachelor’s degree at the University of Georgia in Athens and earned his law degree from Mercer University.

Billy currently serves as chairman of the board for the Cherokee County Hospital Authority, as chairman and president of the board of the Cherokee County Board of Education Foundation, and as a member of the board of directors for Northside Hospital Atlanta. He also leads the Riverside Cemetery Association, a request from his father before his death.

I’ve never been known to give up,” said Billy. “And quitting, that’s nothing I’ve ever been accused of in law either.

As a civil litigator, Billy has attained some of the highest jury verdicts in the United States in cases involving exposure to pesticides. He successfully represented plaintiffs in the L-Tryptophan litigation suit, a three-year trial that saw him travel all over the country. He also tried a chemical exposure case where he was up against big law firms out of New York and California—and was awarded the highest jury verdict recorded in the state of Georgia at the time.

Life Lessons

Billy served in Vietnam and recalls it as “scary, an experience you never get over.” But traveling with his father, who was a representative and senator for the state of Georgia, was what changed his life most. The lessons he learned from his dad on those trips still stay with him.

Always think,” Billy said. “By that, my dad meant when you make a decision, think about the ramifications, not only the immediate but the long-term."

Always be empathetic, and if you disagree or have a different opinion from someone, always voice it in a tactful way, because in the future you’ll be able to work with them in tandem. You don’t ever want to burn bridges in our line of work.
